
LONDON, MILAN, 13th April 2026 – identifAI, a leader in deepfake detection technology, today announced the release of its first ‘Deepfake Intelligence Report’. Based on analysis of more than 10,000 global deepfake incidents between January 2020 and March 2026, the report reveals that deepfakes have evolved from a technological novelty to a core attack vector for threat actors.
The findings present a stark warning that synthetic media and manipulation has crossed a new threshold in global threat dynamics, with deepfakes driving political destabilization, systemic financial exploitation and cognitive manipulation amplified by social media algorithms.
Political manipulation represents nearly a quarter (24.6%) of the threat landscape, with incidents primarily impacting major democratic and economic hubs as threat actors operate from jurisdictions with more permissive cybercrime environments.
The report also finds that synthetic media has been weaponized to manipulate geopolitical narratives by targeting high-profile political targets, including a senior Israeli political leader (5.4%), a prominent US political figure (3.1%), and a number of Middle Eastern state entities (1.4%).

The technical sophistication of synthetic media operations has matured, moving from the capability to fool humans, to algorithmic manipulation designed to surpass advanced verification thresholds.
The most common methods of deepfake attacks are video (45.6%), mixed media (25.2%), images (17.4%), and voice cloning (10.5%). The report also notes a shift towards fraud-related deepfake incidents, which now constitute 20.1% of the total, and warns that the sophistication of multi-modal techniques, including biometric bypass, will increase over the next 12 months.

The report concludes with key recommendations for organizations, regulators, and identity verification providers, such as advancing digital provenance standards and evolving liability frameworks that would compel social media platforms to take responsibility for the algorithmic amplification of synthetic media. It also recommends technology controls, such as protocol-level camera injection defences and multi-modal biometric checks to correlate vocal and facial analysis.

An incident is classified and ingested into identifAI’s observation framework solely if it represents a case of a deepfake being deployed in the real world, substantiated by English-based media reporting globally or through explicit mentions of synthetic media operations on social media platforms.
